Abroad

Featuring anywhere out of Suffolk – some things are just too good to ignore.

Tapas, more tapas, olive oil and salt

Just back from Palma with bags of sea salt, delicious olive oil and no snow.

Restaurant Show – London –  11 – 13th October 2010

A great day out for anyone interested in food and food technology but this year no one from Suffolk? At least if they were there I didn’t see them. Several British ice cream makers, cheese makers and salami producers offering tastings and insight into their world.

Goodwood

Poached Cornice Pear with Creme de Muir and dark chocolate ganache, garnished with a dark chocolate box, fresh blackberries and Sauce Anglaise with crystallised violets

A posh pudding at a posh party, eaten at the Goodwood Revival Party on Saturday night.  Madame Maincourse did explain to the fellow guests on the table that the dessert would be making an appearance on the blog, especially as it was seasonal and had rather nice, fat juicy but cultivated blackberries.  James Martin was there and seemed to be enjoying it! Sorry about the quality of the picture - the theme was Dracula and it was rather dark!

Leicester Curry

Had to drive to Leicester but too late for our usual samosa shop, so tried another one, but this time a meat -serving establishment. It’s Ramadan so they were still busy at 9.30pm but we had lamb and chicken curries, naan and the best rice ever. Sooooo tasty…and each dish under £4.00. Had to have another one to take away with 10 samosa’s and here are the left overs for my lunch - with my home made greek yoghurt raita to cool it down. And yes, I grew the cucumber!

Wayuls

Visit to Uncle David’s near Welshpool – a retired master baker he sun dries his own tomatoes and smokes the odd salmon (and at least 40 a day) and holds the record for the biggest fish ever caught in the River Banwy. We had fantastic Welsh Black beef cold with salad, home cooked ham and desserts from his local deli.

 London breakfast

Two perfectly poached eggs, on top of thick smoked salmon, on a toasted muffin, with hollandaise sauce, with freshly squeezed orange juice and a great coffee. £8.40 at the Greek caff with the smiley owner next to my daughter’s house in Crouch Hill.

 The Secret Garden Party Festival

Suffolk Foodies – this is the festival for food. Forget Latitude’s long queues for mediocre.  SGP only a bit further away and more food outlets than anywhere I have been to lately. As far as I could tell it was all made on the spot, interesting, tasty and most of it around £5pp. There were burritos, tapas, thali… lots for veggies, chunky locally sourced burgers and bacon sandwhiches…a market selling bread, fruit, cheeses…smoothies powered by bicycle, coconut water from Costa Rica that sold out, champagne by the glass and Aspalls Cider…there was breakfast. lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and midnight snacks. We cooked as well but if we had the money we needn’t have bothered.
